The Ultimate Star Wars Concert

TICKETS: EVENTBRITE

Somtow Sucharitkul and the Siam Sinfonietta present the first epic symphony concert in Southeast Asia with music from all nine of the already released Star Wars movies!

Imperial March? Duel of the Fates? The Jedi Steps? Luke and Leia? Cantina Band? You'll hear ALL those favorites and more — music from all eight main sequence Star Wars movies, using the full scale John Williams Signature Series scores, with full symphony and chorus — plus excerpts from the Rogue One score by Michael Giacchino!

Since 2015, Siam Sinfonietta has featured some favorite Star Wars selections in its annual New Year concert and as encore pieces, but this time they will be presenting almost two hours of music including narration by special guest Alan Dean Foster, author of "The Force Awakens" and ghost writer of the original, very first "Star Wars" novel.

Those who were young in 1977 when the first Star Wars film swept into your lives, relive the thrills of your childhood ... those who grew up on The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars, experience the excitement all over again — young people now just discovering these legendary films — hear it all from a live, 80-piece symphony orchestra and big chorus! Thailand's 501st will provide Storm Troopers!

Income from this concert will all go to making possible Siam Sinfonietta's April tour to Carnegie Hall, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Thai-American relations.

Conductor Somtow Sucharitkul was in the audience at the Uptown Theater in Washington DC at the very opening show in 1977. The next year, he sold his first science fiction story to Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. In 1982, Somtow was with Gary Kurtz, producer of "The Empire Strikes Back", at the Hugo Awards ceremony when both of them won awards: "Empire" for "Best Dramatic Presentation" and Somtow for "Best New Writer". As an artist, his life has often intersected with and been influenced by the epic series. Conducting this concert is "one of my bucket list items," he said.

Alan Dean Foster will be available after the show to sign copies of "The Force Awakens", "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" and other Star Wars books.

Information about tickets will be made available soon! Tickets will cost 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 baht.

A Child of Our Time

A Child of Our Time

Every year for the past 3 years, Opera Siam has joined forces with the Israeli, German, and often other embassies such as the Czech embassy to do an event to help memorialize the Holocaust and to educate young people in the region about the past. In particular, we put on the first Asian performance of the opera Brundibár, originally performed by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp, and we twice brought the opera The Diary of Anne Frank into the repertoire.

In the year 1938, a young Polish Jew named Herschel Grynszpan visited the German Embassy in Paris. He shot an official named Ernst vom Rath. After an inflammatory speech by Joseph Goebbels, the incident set off a night of pogroms, persecution, and flames which killed over 90,000 people and caused 30,000 Jews to be arrested and sent to concentration camps.

2018 is the 80th year since Kristallnacht, the horrifying night that is considered to mark the beginning of the Holocaust. Because of this, we plan a major event, a performance of Tippett’s oratorio A Child of Our Time, which tells of the events that led to Kristallnacht, but does so in a universal language, speaking directly to people of all cultures. It is an emotional, dramatic and moving work. Its drama is punctuated by five African American spirituals: songs like Steal Away to Jesus, Go Down Moses and Deep River provide moments of contemplation and intercultural reference.

This is a moving and powerful work. The Siam Philharmonic, international soloists, and the Siam Orpheus Choir will join forces under the baton of Somtow Sucharitkul. The Israeli Embassy will provide am exhibit about the Holocaust. This is a chance not only to be moved, but to help teach our young people not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Prelude to Carnegie: Trisdee conducts the New World Symphony

TICKETS:  EVENTBRITE and THAITICKETMAJOR

Siam Sinfonietta will go to the New World this April - Thailand's favorite youth orchestra has been invited as a showcase program at the Sounds of Spring International Music Festival, Carnegie Hall.

As a foretaste of America, Trisdee will conduct the Siam Sinfonietta in one of the world's most popular symphonies - the New World Symphony by Dvorak - No. 3 on "The Gramophone" magazine's "top ten symphonies of all time."

Called "a genius" by London's OPERA magazine, named one of the world's top ten "conductors under 30 to watch" by the Italian press after his acclaimed Pesaro Festival debut, Trisdee's recent conducting of "La Bohème" in Bangkok was called "a completely fresh, energetic take on Puccini’s score, blowing away the cobwebs of convention and pulling a glorious rush of sound from the Orchestra. "

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Thai-American government contact, Siam Sinfonietta's U.S. tour is also part of the "48 Forever" project, celebrating some of the music of HM King Rama IX and showing it in the context of world composers.

Income from this concert will go towards the expenses needed to send our kids to Carnegie. We need to raise a minimum of five million baht, so please come and show your support! Tickets are 500 and 1,000 baht with a few special "sponsor seats" at 2,000 baht.

Bangkok Premiere of New "Ten Lives of the Buddha" episode

August 5 and 7 at 8 pm, Family Matinee Aug 6 at 4 pm

Thailand Cultural Center (Main Hall)

Bangkok audiences have now seen four episodes from Somtow Sucharitkul's massive DasJati - Ten Lives of the Buddha, which when completed will be, in the words of London's Opera Now magazine, "the biggest integrated classical music work of all time."  Bangkokhas seen The Silent Prince (Part I), Mahajanaka (Part II), Bhuridat (Part VI) and The Chariot of Heaven (Part IV).  The third part, Suwana Sama - The Faithful Son, premiered in a special production in Rangsit in December 2015.  That production now comes to Bangkok for the first time, in three performances that are planned before an inticipated international tour.  The production celebrates the birthday of H.M. The Dowager Queen, and the story is one about the love between mother and son, so powerful that is able to conquer even death itself.

London's Opera magazine's review of this production: "lively, colorful, enjoyable, and ultimately very moving combination of opera and ballet, of the sacred and profane." Michael Proudfoot, in The Nation, commented: "Somtow conjures another breathtaking ending. Sama is fatally wounded by an evil king, hunting for trophies. The dying Sama does not reprove the king, but asks him to summon his blind parents. As the king realises the full horror of his action, a statue, which has been onstage throughout the entire opera, suddenly comes to life, and reveals herself as Bahusodari, the messenger of the King of Heaven. In an amazing single aria, hauntingly accompanied by solo violin, she tells the king he has killed the Bodhisattva. As the king goes to bring Sama's parents to his dead body, the animals of the forest (the ballet dancers) mourn Sama's death, to the doleful strains of the khlui, the Thai flute, brilliantly played by Somnuek Saeng-Arun. As his devoted and deeply religious parents grieve over Sama's dead body, he comes back to life, cures his parents' blindness, forgives the king, and enjoins the villagers and animals to "be faithful to your parents and you shall find happiness", and the chorus reflects that "happiness has returned to the world through the devotion of a faithful son". It is a sublime ending, leaving many in the audience with tears in their eyes. Perhaps the most amazing performance was by the American soprano Cassandra Black. For Suwana Sama, Black, as the statue, must sit completely immobile on stage for 70 minutes, before coming to life to sing her one and only aria -- a sensational showpiece, dazzlingly sung."

In this production Black is joined by popular Chicago Lyric Opera star Stacey Tappan as a celestial being, Damian Whiteley in the virtuoso double role of the King of Heaven and the King of Benares, and Jak Cholvijarn reprising his role (as he has throughout the series) of the Boddhisattva.  SUWANA SAMA, one of the ten iconic Jataka tales that are loved by Buddhists all around the world, is a moving tale of devotion and redemption, set in the magical forest of the Himavant. The Faithful Son has talking statues, poisonous giant serpents, gods and demons, and a mysterious child whose skin is pure gold.

Tickets range from 500 budget seats to 5,000 baht for a VIP ticket that includes a reception.  They are available from Thai Ticket Major.  The link to purchase tickets is http://www.thaiticketmajor.com/performance/suwana-sama-the-faithful-son-2017-en.html

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK Op. 60 [1969]

Monodramatic opera in 4 scenes and 21 episodes by Grigori Frid based on the original diary of Anne Frank (R. Rait-Kovalkova)

Kaleigh Rae Gamaché as Anne Frank

conducted by Trisdee na Patalung

Bangkok Art and Culture Center

English version by James Briscoe & Alla Abramovich-Gomon [ 60 minutes ]

In brief scenes (“Birthday”, “School”, “Conversation with Father”, “Summons to the Gestapo”, “The Hiding place” and “Razzia”) unfolds the depiction of the fate of the 13-year-old Anne Frank, who hides with her family in the back part of a house in Amsterdam from July 1942 until her arrest in August 1944. Anne’s diary entries from this time show the emotional pressure borne by the child, but also that her moral power and unbending will to live cannot be broken by this pressure. Anne’s profound thoughts, her naive joy over a gift or a patch of blue sky, but also her fear and will to remain courageous, the budding love for Peter, her sense of situation comedy, hope for freedom and more humanity – all this also finds oppressive expression in the music. The libretto, almost literally taken from the original, is integrated into a musical-lyrical narrative the emotional content of which shows both the tragedy of the events and the girl’s poetic expressive power. Special attention is devoted to the characters who appear in Anne’s monologues but not in person: her father, her sister Margot and friends. Through these there results a special multi-dimensional quality which expands the scope of the monodrama’s plot.
