A NOTE FROM SOMTOW SUCHARITKUL
About our January 18th Concert
This concert is our annual reminder of the Holocaust, and we try to put it on close to the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 2nd 1945 — 80 years ago. This year we're performing a rare and beautiful masterpiece, the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs by Górecki, sung by Cassandra Black, who will also be doing one of her signature works, the Strauss Four Last Songs.
I want as many people to be able to come to this concert free as possible, in particular young people. It's very important, in our troubled world, to learn about history to avoid repeating it, and young people in this country haven't been taught very much of this important history. So we will be inviting people to register for complimentary tickets.
But, in order to cover the expenses of the concert, I need some of our more affluent audience members and supporters to make donations and we have earmarked one hundred VIP seats — the best in the house — for people willing to donate 1000 baht (or more). I'm also asking my friends around the world, even if they can't travel to Thailand to the concert — they would be subsidizing a seat for someone who will be grateful to hear this music played by a live symphony orchestra.
If I can add what I raise on this to funding we've been offered by various embassies, we will be able to bring you this beautiful music as well as provide a learning experience for numerous people young and old.
Today, as I make this post, it is Christmas. It will shortly also be my 73rd birthday. Don't give me a present. Instead, tell me you'll donate 1000 baht (around $35) to this concert (and come to it as well, if you can.).
If you are not in Thailand and are using paypal.me/operasiam, please add about $5 to cover fees and conversion. If you’re in Thailand, you can make a deposit directly to the QR code below. Please send a note so that we can either book your VIP seats or let us know we can gift the seats.
